Abstract:
Giving employees quality training increases their confidence at work, their
performance levels also increase. A happier, more productive and more efficient
workforce is the end outcome. It helps the staff to adapt to their tasks more rapidly
whilst also encouraging skill development and career growth. For an industry that relies
on services, like telecoms, this is even more important. Because contemporary
technology is advancing the sector every day. Training has a substantial favorable
impact on the performance of the whole company because it enables staff to adapt to
new technology advancements and successfully engage with clients whilst fostering
trust and integrity. As a result, the researcher of the present study believed that it would
be wise to focus the study on a telecom company because it was reported that customer
care staff employee performance at ABC company is not at a satisfactory level and
employees revealed that lack of training is the cause. Hence, the author wanted to
unravel the reasons for their underperformance. Thus, the primary objective of this
research is to determine the effect of training and development on worker performance
at ABC telecommunication corporation in Sri Lanka. While employee performance
serves as the dependent variable in this study, training and development serve as the
independent variables. Training has been further sub categorized into on the job
training, off the job training, whilst development has been further sub divided into
personnel development, career development for the ease of analysis. Within the
quantitative research methodology, a questionnaire survey was utilized as the study
instrument. As seen by the results, employee performance is significantly influenced
by training and development that are offered to them. Out of all, it was found that onthe-job training had the biggest effect on employee performance, while personnel
development, off the job training and career development were found to have some
level of influence on employee performance consecutively. Thus, it was suggested that
to offer on the job training for its staff more while prioritizing of personal-focused staff
development initiatives.
