Employer Obligations on Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Laws A Contemporary Review

Abstract

This study examines the obligations of employers under Sri Lanka's Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) laws and their implications for Human Resource Management (HRM). As the legal framework surrounding OHS evolves, it becomes imperative for organizations to ensure compliance while fostering a culture of safety and employee well being. The article outlines key employer responsibilities mandated by the Factories Ordinance and related legislation, including the provision of a safe work environment, risk management, employee training, and incident reporting. It further analyzes the strategic role of HR professionals in integrating organizational health and safety compliance into HR practices, enhancing workforce engagement, and minimizing workplace hazards. The findings underscore the importance of aligning OHS obligations with HRM strategies to promote organizational success and a healthier workforce. Through recommendations for effective implementation and ongoing training, this study aims to provide HR professionals with the tools necessary to navigate the complexities of OHS laws in Sri Lanka, ultimately contributing to safer workplaces and improved employee morale.
