Abstract:
This study investigates the impact of training and development on the performance of sewing machine
operators in an apparel company in Horana, addressing challenges in maintaining consistent performance levels
due to inadequacies in training initiatives. The study examines four key aspects: training methods, identification
of training needs, trainer effectiveness, and training evaluation, and their influence on productivity, work quality,
and employee motivation. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from a randomly selected sample
of 104 sewing machine operators. The data was analyzed to assess the relationship between training practices and
employee performance. The findings indicate that effective training and development significantly enhance
employee performance, improve operational efficiency, and foster job satisfaction. Furthermore, the study
explores how training influences employee adaptability, teamwork, and problem-solving skills—critical elements
for sustaining a competitive workforce. The research highlights the importance of aligning training programs with
industry advancements and technological innovations to improve overall efficiency. It also underscores the role
of continuous learning in increasing employee engagement and reducing turnover rates. Management commitment
to training and development emerges as a key factor in ensuring long-term organizational success. The study
emphasizes the need for accurately identifying training needs, applying suitable methods, evaluating training
outcomes, and ensuring trainer effectiveness. Practical recommendations are provided to assist the apparel
company in Horana, and similar organizations, in designing strategic training programs that align with
performance objectives. The insights gained offer HR professionals and policymakers valuable guidance in
shaping future training strategies, ultimately driving workforce excellence and contributing to business
sustainability.
