Impact of Health and Safety Management on Female Machine Operators’ Performance in Gampaha District, Sri Lanka

Impact of Health and Safety Management on Female Machine Operators’ Performance in Gampaha District, Sri Lanka
Wickramarathne, Dhananji
The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of Health and safety management on the
working performance of machine operators in the apparel sector (with special reference to the Gampaha district).
The Physical and environmental conditions, ergonomics and psychosocial conditions, and Health and safety
practices of the company were considered as the independent variables. Female workers’ working performance
was considered the dependent variable. 300 female machine operators is used as the sample for the study. The
questionnaire was used to collect data from probation-level employees. Respondents’ agreement and disagreement
were indicated on the Five Point Likert Scale as the scaling method. The measurement scale for independent and
dependent variables was an interval. The data was analyzed using SPSS version 20. Mean and standard deviation
was used for all the variables for univariate analysis and correlation coefficient and regression analysis was used
for bivariate analysis. The hypotheses were tested using the Pearson Product Movement Correlation Coefficient
(r). The result of the correlation analysis illustrated that the Physical & Environmental factors, Ergonomics and
psychosocial factors, and Health & Safety practices of the company, were positively correlated with female
workers working performance. Also, this study concluded that there is a significant impact of Physical &
Environmental factors, ergonomics and psychosocial factors, and Health & Safety practices of the company on
female worker performance in the apparel industry. The adjusted R2 was 0.104 showing that there was a 10.4%
the variation in female workers’ working performance which is accounted for by the combined effects of the
Physical and environmental conditions, ergonomics and psychosocial conditions, and Health & Safety practices
of the company. It indicates that a sufficient portion of the model (10.4%) is fit for the population. Also, this study
reveals some recommendations to improve the organization’s health and safety management and working
performance among the employees.

The Stigmatization: ‘Mark of Slaves’ and Mental Health: Evidence from Visually Impaired Students in Sri Lanka
De Silva, W K D G; Kularathne, H M R D
Everyone living in society has to face challenges in the ever-changing world. People tend to do different
things to adapt to them. People are indispensable resources for society. Therefore, their physical and mental fitness
is expected to be properly applied to anything. The most important of these is the mental fitness of man. A person's
mental integrity enables him to perform tasks accurately and effectively. But even if they have the ability, another
person works to trap them in a certain frame of society due to certain shortcomings of the people. But it is believed
that doing so will greatly affect their ability and mental health. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect
of stigmatization on mental health of visually impaired students in the Southern Province in Sri Lanka and to
explore their views on how and what to deal with stigma in the future. The methodology is done with quantitative
research approach and 80 students were selected based on simple random sampling technique as the sample out
of 100 populations. Data collected through questionnaires, all constructs were valid, reliable and fit the research
model. Visually impaired students believed that stigmatization had a significant negative impact on the mental
health of them. The model has four hypotheses, two are accepted and two are rejected. Further, the greater the
discrimination of them, the lower the mental health of students. As well as there was no significant impact of
negative stereotypes and devaluation on the mental health.

Is the Procrastination - ‘The Thief of Time’ a Friend or Foe? Evidence from Teachers in Sri Lanka
Sewwandi, H R S; Kularathne, H M R D
The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of the procrastination and well-being of the
teachers in the government sector in the Elpitiya divisional secretariat of Galle district in Sri Lanka. This
quantitative study focuses on five dimensions of procrastination which are fear of failure, job mismatch,
dependence, difficulty in making decisions, and rebellion instead of control. The sample of study is 160 male and
female teachers in selected schools. Data was gathered from teachers in the government sector in the Elpitiya
divisional secretariat of Galle district in Sri Lanka for this study and analyzed using the SPSS data analyzing
package. Results reveal that procrastination makes a negative impact on the well-being of teachers and study
concludes that fear of failure, job mismatch, dependence, and difficulty in making decisions significantly and
negatively impact the well-being of teachers while rebel instead of control is removed from the study model. Five
hypotheses were accepted out of six hypotheses since H6 is rejected. Finally, several recommendations were
suggested at the end of the study.

Impact of Big Five Personalities on Counterproductive Works Behaviors of Teachers: Special References to Kalkudah Zonal Education Office in Batticaloa District
Harikaran, Sivarajah; Delistha, Suntharalingam
Employees play an important role in determining the quality of the product, the reputation of the
organization, and the performance of an organization. Personality traits are predictors of employees’ behavior in
an organization. This research aims to investigate the impact of the big five personalities on the counterproductive
work behavior (CWB) of employees. For this study purpose, five research hypotheses were examined while
considering the Big Five dimensions of personality, which are Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness,
Neuroticism, and Openness to experience, which is believed that the big five personalities significantly impact
the employees’ CWB. Researchers selected mixed methods for this study purpose and the data for quantitative
approach was collected from 285 teachers in Kalkudah Zonal education office in Batticaloa through google
questionnaires by using stratified sampling methods and Regression analysis was mainly used for analysing data.
Further, Qualitative methods were used to validate the findings of this research. For this purpose, data were
collected from 15 teachers through a structured interview using purposive sampling methods. Thematic analysis
was used to analyze the data. Results revealed that Neuroticism and Openness to experience, Conscientiousness,
and agreeableness, have a significant impact on the CWB of employees. However, Extraversion has not
significantly impacted on CWB. Openness to experience and Neuroticism positively impacted on CWB and
Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness, have negatively impacted on CWB. Therefore, the researcher provides
some recommendations to overcome those kinds of CWB. Those are, hire the employees carefully, communicate,
take immediate action, encourage opposite thinking, prioritize the rationale than emotions, strengthen
relationships with others, and facility management.
