With the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring the New Corona Virus (COVID-
19) to be pandemic, businesses worldwide were forced to shut down their offices,
factories, showrooms & facilities. The rapid outbreak of COVID-19 presented an
alarming health crisis to Sri Lanka, too. The government announced island-wide
curfew w.e.f.20.03.2020 while locking down the entire country. As a responsible
public liability tiles manufacturing company of Sri Lanka, we also commenced
shutdown of our manufacturing and all sales unit for a temporary period to keep
employees in their houses per government directives. However, businesses in Sri
Lanka seriously affected due to the continuous locked down of the country. Some
export-oriented manufacturing organisations have resumed their operations little
by little as per the directive of the Presidential Secretariat of Sri Lanka. In addition
to the human impact, there was also a significant commercial and operational
impact. Organizations were focused their efforts internally to protect the
sustainability of their companies.

The government institutes are affected mainly by the COVID – 19 pandemic as they
could not function properly and interact with the public since last year. Since
government institutes significantly interact with the general public, steps needed to
be taken to reduce the interaction but continue the services provided adhering to
published health and safety guidelines. All government sectors, including the
vocational education sector, the policy-making bodies and training providers in
government, face similar issues with this pandemic.

Lokuwithanage, Amitha Kumara
The unexpected outbreak of the Covid 19 pandemic enormously affected every
industry globally, which has paved the way for panic and stress among industries
and businesses due to the shutdown of the economy. It is a fact that the sectors with
labour-intensive work such as manufacturing units are severely hit in the present
situation due to the highly transmissible nature of the virus. Samson Rubber Industry
(Pvt) Ltd (DSI Tyres) also felt the gravity of the pandemic situation on 20th March
2020, where we had to shut down all the plants due to the country lockdown. The
Management immediately appointed Covid 19 prevention committee and gave the
authority to develop a proper plan to execute production controlling Covid 19
impact inside the company. The primary purpose of this study is to present the
effectiveness of the practices proposed by the committee while highlighting the
effects of the methods on the bottom line of the business.
